The Subsidy Gap: Who Pays Their Own Way in College Sports

NCAA Membership Financial Reporting System (MFRS) · 80 Division I programs · Most recent year available

Most college athletic departments don't actually pay for themselves. They lean on "allocated revenue" — student fees, direct payments from the university, and government support — to balance the books. At University of Massachusetts, Amherst, 81% of the athletics budget comes from these subsidies. A handful of blue-blood programs, by contrast, run almost entirely on revenue they generate themselves.

Most Subsidized Athletic Departments

Share of total athletic revenue that comes from student fees, direct and indirect institutional support, and government funding.
